The Bloop

In 1997 the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recorded an ultra-low-frequency sound in the South Pacific loud enough to be detected by sensors more than 5,000 kilometres apart. No known animal or geological process fully accounted for the volume. Later analysis suggested it was likely ice movement. The name stuck.
